TAVISTOCK's first lantern parade is one of many events taking place as part of a concentrated Christmas campaign, organised by the town's BID (Business Improvement District).

From the lantern parade to a firewalk, Tavistock really is the place to be this festive season, said BID manager Lisa Wadling.

Starting with Dickensian evening tomorrow (Friday), the Christmas campaign has plenty in store to keep most people entertained.

The well-known and well-attended Dickensian evening will this year feature a few new attractions.

Lisa said: 'Dickensian evening is a really important date in Tavistock diary — it gives us the opportunity to showcase the town at its best! It's a chance for local people and visitors alike to support the businesses and for them to show their appreciation.

'I am constantly looking at new things to keep the crowds entertained and bring more people into Tavistock.

'It's a great place any time of year but for me, there's something about Tavistock at Christmas — I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.'

So as well as the usual mulled wine and roasted chestnut stands, carol singers, and other popular entertainment throughout the town, BID has organised a couple more attractions to keep everyone amused.

At the top of West Street there will be a photo booth where people will be able to 'dress up' in Dickensian clothing and have their picture taken and a printed copy, for free.

There will be also be a fire performer in the churchyard entertaining the crowds, along with a puppet theatre performance by St Andrew's Church, on stage in the square.

The Christmas lights will be turned at 6pm by teacher of the year from Tavistock College, Crispin Chambers, with the help of school children and Father Christmas.

And for the shoppers the town's shops and the pannier market will be open until 8pm.

Then, on December 13, children from Tavistock and the surrounding areas will be taking part in the town's first lantern parade, carrying lanterns made by the children with the help of Wren Music.

Starting at 6pm, groups will start at different points of the town and meet in Bedford Square for a Christmas sing along.

There will be rides on the square, a face painter, entertainment, and shops will be open late, including Tavistock Pannier Market.

There will be a road closure in place for a short period of time to allow the children to move around the town safely.

December 20 will see the firewalk take place in Bedford Square at 7pm, when around 35 people will walk over 18ft of burning hot coals in aid of the ROC charity.

Lisa said: 'Things have been quiet over the past few weeks so if we sit back and do nothing we will get nothing.

'We need to be proactive and encourage people to Tavistock.

'People go out for a day and not just for shopping so we need to show them the Tavistock experience.'
