COUNCILLOR Johnson must be commended for her suggestion that Tavistock Town Council take over responsibility for the car parks in addition to the public toilets. The town would benefit from the £1 million plus per annum in fees and fines that at present disappears in the coffers of the borough council. In two or three years this would finance the extension of the multi-storey car park on Brook Street, a desired improvement of several years.

Another essential facility that could, with great benefit to the town, be taken from the borough council is the Tourist Information Office. It does not take account of the now extended holiday period; it is closed on Sundays except in August and again from October to May. Those restrictions show a lack of consideration for the visitors and the town as the gateway to Dartmoor.

On taking over the public lavatories it is hoped the town council will extend the hours to what they were and reinstate those in the Brook Street multi-storey car park. At present there is no such facility at that end of the town.
