A GOOD cross-section of 19 members of Tavistock Athletic Club made the short trip to Saltram last Saturday evening to take part in the DML 5K. The course uses tracks and paths within the estate, starting well above the house in a wooded area before sweeping down and around the house to reach the path alongside the Plym Estuary. At the end of this section it is back to tarmac for an uphill finish. First man home for Tavistock in sixth place was Adam Holland in a time of 16 minutes 52 seconds, but breathing down his neck was Tony Symons in 16.55 and eighth place to be the first Vet 45 home. Chris Champion followed closely in 17 minutes dead for tenth place, with his son Nick next, a creditable 19th in 18.14. Nick was the first of several U15s from the club who put in some sparkling times, beating some of the regular club runners. First lady home was new member Rachel Clay who was 41st in 19.56, and third lady home overall in her first race for the club. RESULTS: 6 Adam Holland 16.52; 8 Tony Symons 16.55; 10 Chris Champion 17.00; 19 Nick Champion 18.14; 30 Toby Clay 19.05 (first race for the club); 38 Matt Macnamara-Waddington 19.43; 41 Rachel Clay 19.56; 43 Rob Musgrave 19.59; 49 Pete Bazley 20.28; 51 Ben Brown 20.29; 58 Kirk England 20.47; 59 Tony Shearer 20.48; 62 Martin Hawkins 20.56; 94 Keith Bowles 23.30; 123 Steve John 26.15; 142 Marion Playle 28.38; 147 Karole Champion 29.12; 151 Ann Woodhouse 30.13; 152 Chris Bundy 30.13. While the road racing season is now in full swing, many members also do track and field in the Devon Open League, and, with many off-road races during the summer, there is a wide range of events to take part in. But competing is not compulsory, and many members just come on Tuesdays and Thursdays to go for a run to keep fit. If you enjoy running at whatever speed, do consider coming down to the sports Hall at Tavistock College at 6.15pm. The only stipulation is that you can run for 30 minutes without stopping which will enable you to join one of the slower groups straight away.
