A NEW book celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Ten Tors expedition is being launched at the Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton on Saturday, November 13.

Simon Dell, a retired West Devon police officer, who compiled 'Ten Tors — The Dartmoor Challenge', will be at the museum from 11am to 1pm, where copies will be available to buy.

Simon will be accompanied by the director of Ten Tors, Brigadier Steve Hodder.

'Ten Tors — The Dartmoor Challenge' is a well researched volume covering the history of this unique event, all the way from its beginnings in 1960 to the present day, with tales and photos from some of the first participants in the first Ten Tors.

It recalls stories about the challenges of snow storms, the foot and mouth outbreaks and torrential rain, to the 50th anniversary event this year.

Simon said: 'If you've walked Ten Tors, or watched and waited for your team to come in, this book is what you've always wanted.

'If Ten Tors is an unknown to you, this book will give you an insight as to why thousands of teenagers have — and will continue to — push themselves beyond all reasonable physical limits just to be able to say: "I've walked Ten Tors!"'

The cost of the book is £2.95 and profits raised are being donated to the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Dogs charity.

To order a copy, complete and return the order form located on the Ten Tors website: events.exeter.ac.uk/tentors

Simon will also be attending a book signing at the Book Stop in Tavistock on Saturday, November 27, between 10am and noon.
