THERE was a chance for some international tuition at Tavistock's recently formed Martial Arts Club when students benefited from a visiting top class instructor from Italy.

The club is run by black belt Umberto Bergonzini, who specialises in the martial arts form of Ryu Ju Jutsu .

Umberto, 30, has been practicing martial arts for 14 years — first in Italy, and, since coming to Tavistock six years ago, in Plymouth and Saltash.

Having trained with different masters and instructors he has been teaching for several years and started his own club at Tavistock College in May.

'Ju Jutsu is a Japanese martial art which can be dated back several hundred years. It is among the most effective self-defence systems taught today,' said Umberto.

'The vast range of the syllabus means that there are techniques that suit people of all strengths, shapes and sizes. Ju Jutsu is suitable for men and women, young and old.'

Umberto says the club offers specially structured sessions for beginners and welcomes martial artists from other disciplines.

'There are many benefits from Ju Jutsu, including promoting good health, increasing fitness, building confidence and providing an enjoyable way to learn something positive whilst making new friends.'

Umberto has 14 students ranging in age from 17 to being in their 50's.

The club meets on Tuesdays between 7.30pm and 9pm. Anyone interested in joining can contact Umberto on (01822) 618952 or just come to one of the classes which are held in the dance studio.
