AN evening of splendid talent will be on show to music lovers in the Tavistock area this month, when the Devon County Youth Orchestra performs in the parish church. The event has been organised in conjunction with Tavistock Music Live to celebrate the 900th anniversary of the granting of the town?s market charter and has been supported by Devon County Council Music Service. Peter Jones, chairman of Tavistock Music Live, said the orchestra gave the opportunity for experienced ensemble players to work alongside the finest young musicians in the county. Already this season, the group has worked with Exeter Music Group Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and includes a repertoire to stretch even advanced players. Peter said: ?The hope is this will give people the opportunity to listen to a reasonable orchestra at a reasonable price. I think a lot of people have perhaps never gone to an orchestra performance because they think it will be highbrow or expensive.? Peter said Tavistock Music Live is aiming to bring far more music to Tavistock in the coming year. The county?s youth concert orchestra and brass band will be performing at Tavistock College in April and in October, all the county groups will be returning to the town for a special ?music comes to town? event. ?Other people on the committee are working on other projects to do with all other musical genres ? we really want people from the area to be involved with music,? said Peter. The programme for the Tavistock concert will include The Gordian Knot Untied by Purcell, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (Vaughan Williams) and the Czech Suite by Dvorak. The conductor will be Paul Matthews. Tickets for the concert, on Saturday February 26, cost £5, £3 for senior citizens and 16 year olds and under. The performance begins at 7.30pm.
