ONE of the best known bands in the Salvation Army, the Chalk Farm Band, is coming to West Devon — their distinctive sounds can be heard at Tavistock's St Eustachius Parish Church on Friday, May 25. It is not their first visit to the town as the brass band has entertained on previous occasions in 1987 and 2001. The concert has been arranged by the Tavistock Corps of the Salvation Army and its member Bram Hughes, who was himself a former player of the Chalk Farm Band. The band is in great demand and has played concerts all over the United Kingdom and Europe — as well as making many television appearances, including childrens' show Blue Peter. Bram, who used to play bass for the band, told the Times: 'They play a wide range of music, including classical, modern, jazz as well as old and new hymns. The band is coming as part of a tour and are due to play in Launceston. It will be good for me to see the band and a lot of pals and I know they will be very well supported in Tavistock.' The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5, with concessions £3, and are available from Bram Hughes on 01822 853356, Lt Col Joan Williams on 01822 617740 or at the door.
