MORE than 250 entries were received for this summer's peace poster competition, organised by the Lions Club of Tavistock.
Children aged from four to 12 produced some wonderful posters and during carnival week, a presentation evening was held in the parish rooms to give certificates and prizes to the very best, following which there was an exhibition in the town library.
Organiser Lion Alan Wroath said that the quality of the art work had been extremely high and that everyone had been very impressed by the thought that had gone into creating a poster following the theme of 'Imagine Peace.'
He said that it was great that this year, Lions were again able to have a senior section with students from Tavistock College producing some wonderful posters.
The winners were: Jacob Woodbridge-Harris, Horrabridge Community Primary School; Dominic Bailey, St Peter's Junior School; George Vowles, Tavistock Primary School; Alex MacRostie, Mary Tavy and Brentor Primary School; Evie Quinlan, Whitchurch Primary School; Anya Anstey, Tavistock College; Annalinn Woolley, St Andrew's C Primary School; Zephyr Quoreenton, St Peter's Junior School.
Anya Anstey's poster was the best in the senior section, while Zephyr Quoreenton's was judged the best overall. Zephyr's poster will represent Tavistock Lions in the district round of the international competition — if she is successful, she could go on to win a trip to the United Nations in New York!
This year the prize for the school with consistently the strongest entries went to Tavistock Primary School, despite fierce competition from Mary Tavy and Brentor Primary School.
The Lions would like to thank all who took part and to their teachers for supporting them. Winning posters can be found on the Lions Club of Tavistock website http://www.tavistocklions.org.uk">www.tavistocklions.org.uk
