SOURTON farmer and local NFU spokesman James McInnes is the new head of the Conservatives in West Devon and Torridge.
Mr McInnes takes over as chairman following the constituency association's recent annual meeting. As chairman of Okehampton and Hatherleigh NFU, he has been prominent in local activity regarding the foot and mouth crisis.
Mr McInnes said he wanted the party to have a higher political profile. He hopes to set up forums on farming and small business so that people can put their views to the party.
As Conservative chairman he succeeds Dr Joe Allen, of Bridestowe.
Outgoing president Mrs Margaret Taylor, of Winkleigh, thanked all retiring officers for their years of service to the association, particularly the hard work done during the general election in support of candidate Geoffrey Cox.
Well known Hatherleigh farmer Geoffrey Cleverdon has been elected president to succeed Mrs Taylor, and consultant anaesthetist Dr Francis Luscombe, of Meavy, was elected to the post of deputy chairman political.
Ken Riddick, of Okehampton, remains deputy chairman for membership and fundraising. Peter Hammond becomes vice-chairman for European Affairs and West Devon Borough Councillor Dick Eberlie remains the chairman for local government.
