OKEHAMPTON Columbines entered a team to play the seven-a -side hockey tournament in Exeter on Saturday. The team had a successful day finishing at the top of their group by some margin. The first game against Tiverton White Eagles gave them an emphatic 3-0 win with two goals from Viv Weatherington and one from Jo Moppett. The second match saw them to a 2-0 win over Dawlish with a penalty made and converted by Moppett and a deflection on the post by Caroline Friend for the second. Columbines had the better share of possession but could not put the ball in the back of the net, resulting in a goalless draw against Isca 3rds. Against Isca 1st, Moppett scored early and Okehampton were able to defend frantically with good goalkeeping from Sharon Stephens to get an important win. The final game in the group stage against Paignton saw a 2-1 win with a further goal from Moppett and a penalty bravely taken by Friend. All matches were achieved by real team work from the Columbines with the youngsters Jess Millar and Abbie Colton running tirelessly and not giving up and the more experienced members of the team passing intelligently and keeping the shape of the side. Both Moppett and Friend had outstanding games. Okehampton lost to Chudleigh in the semi-finals 1-0. Chudleigh went on to win the tournament and Columbines could be well pleased with their performance.
