A SPECIAL screening of an Oscar-nominated film takes place at The Wharf in Tavistock next Monday to raise money for charity.

The film, Buena Vista Social Club, was directed by Wim Wenders and tells the story of musician Ry Cooder's 1996 visit to Havana when he discovered a group of talented musicians — some of whom were in their 70s and 90s.

Cooder produced three albums featuring their talents named Buena Vista Social Club — a nightclub in Batista's pre-revolutionary Cuba which has since been demolished.

The film is one of The Guardian's top ten films of last year.

The film showing will raise money for the Santa Rosa Fund which supports a school of the same name in Managua, Nicaragua.

The charity buys educational materials, uniforms and supports educational developments at the school such as school journeys.

Before the showing at 8pm, Cuban rum punch will be served to supporters and anyone who would like to know more about the fund.
