CELEBRITY chef Peter Gorton from the Horn of Plenty at Gulworthy has joined the planning committee of the first ever Tavistock Food and Drink Festival due to be held his summer.

The festival, being held by Tavistock Business Association, is scheduled for July 31 and August 1 and aims to put the town on the map.

More than 40 regional food and drink companies have already applied to exhibit ensuring success for the festival in its inaugural year and the event, centred in the pannier market, is set to encompass local restaurants and hotels, celebrity chefs, cookery demonstrations and farm walks.

Tavistock is considered to be a natural venue for the South West region and organisers hope to make it a mecca for food fans by hosting a food festival on a really large scale.

Incoming president of the Tavistock Business Association Mike Hooper said he was thrilled to have Peter Gorton as part of the planning committee: ?Peter is a high profile chef who has lots of experience working with food festivals nationwide,? he said.

?He will be giving cookery demonstrations as well as helping us to recruit other well known ?foodies? to give talks and demonstrations.

?His work with other foods events will ensure that our festival is properly planned and managed.?

Dartmoor National Park Authority, West Devon Borough Council, Taste of the West and Devon Food Links are giving support to the event.
