A VERY special Okehampton cat will be marking two years of residence at Dartmoor Railway with a fundraising day on Sunday.
Staff and volunteers at Okehampton Railway Station will be staging Percy Day on August 5 in honour of their famous feline resident, who was taken in as a rescue cat two years ago.
There will be a bric-a-brac stall, a children’s quiz and Percy merchandise on sale, including postcards, T-shirts and mugs and keyrings.
The day is in aid of Mitzi’s Kitty Corner, the animal shelter in south Devon which took Percy off the streets as a stray, nursed him back to health and rehomed him. He settled in quickly at the heritage railway and is a major draw for visitors.
‘This event will highlight Mitzi’s Kitty Corner and to raise funds to help more cats back to full health,’ said Dartmoor Railway duty manager Paul Martin.
‘Percy is popular with regular visitors to the station and some people travel quite a distance for a meeting with the now-famous Percy.
He even has his own Facebook page that has over 1,100 likes.
‘He has become a bit of a celebrity featuring in both the local and national press, even recently having a two-page spread in Your Cat magazine.
‘Officially his job title is Station Pest Controller.’
The day, from 11am to 4pm, follows a successful day this time last year at the station which raised £400 for Mitzi’s Kitty Corner.
