MEMBERS of the Dartmoor Tinworking Research Group recently turned detective when, under the leadership of Dr Tom Greeves, they attempted to unravel the mystery of the whereabouts of two tin mills on Roborough Down, established in about 1600 by William Crymes, one time lord of the manor of Buckland Monachorum. The group's annual meeting was held in March at the village hall in Scorriton. At the close of formal business, archaeologist Robert Waterhouse gave an illustrated talk entitled 'The Tavistock Canal and Associated Mines' and this was followed by an afternoon field trip exploring the Holne Chase tin mine.
