A GENTLEMEN'S club in Tavistock has decided reluctantly to call it a day but has ended on a high note by making a donation to the Help for Heroes charity.

The Victorian Breakfast Club, which had around 30 members, was wound up after five years of fellowship and breakfasting in Victorian garb in and around Tavistock watering holes.

Members decided, following the death of their club president Martyn Dudden, to wind up the club and donate any residue funds to a good cause.

Founder club member and past president Jeffrey Stackhouse said: 'It all started as a bit of fun when a collection of gentlemen decided once a quarter to meet up and have breakfast together.

'Members had to wear black shoes, a waistcoat, a cravat and hat. We had no political or charitable connections, it was purely for fun.'

Among the 'watering holes' the club used to frequent, were Finbow's, Smiffy's, the Duke of Bedford Hotel, the Horn of Plenty and Christophers.

This week the Victorian Breakfast Club received a letter of thanks from Maria Rees of the Help for Heroes charity, which supports those wounded while serving in the Armed Forces.

The club's donation of £141.91 will go towards the Help for Heroes Pathfinder project for an Army Convalescent Centre in Edinburgh to house 12 soldiers while they recover their lives after sustaining injuries.

Jeffrey said: 'Help the Heroes seemed a perfect choice for a charity on behalf of the members to make our final charitable donation.'
