TIDY Tavi's next litter-picking expedition will take place on Saturday, June 7. Due to the calendar and because each gathering is scheduled for the first Saturday in each month, it will have been 34 days since the last Tavistock-wide tidy up. A spokesman for Tidy Tavi said: 'This is more than enough time for a significant amount of litter to build up around the town, despite the efforts of the good folks who turn out with their litter pickers on an individual basis during the month. 'On that theme, the group would like to thank all those individuals, especially the proprietors of businesses and their employees, who make an effort to keep the areas around their establishments, however small, rubbish free. 'This enables the Tidy Tavi teams and the council cleaners to concentrate on other areas and widen their efforts by visiting streets further out from the main through routes and the centre of town.' The spokesman paid tribute to the efforts made by Graham and Valery of the 'Grub Up' venture based in the layby off the A386 south of Tavistock. 'They not only provide a rubbish bin for their many customers, but also strive to keep the layby area and grass verges, which would otherwise be black spots, clear of litter discarded by others. 'There are unfortunately, examples of the opposite kind where businesses leave rubbish to build up around establishments causing an eyesore for everybody.' Tidy Tavi has enjoyed a resurgence in volunteer numbers during recent months and it is hoped that good weather will help to swell numbers this month. Anyone who would like to help should meet up outside The Wharf at 10am.
