THE first two successful 'Manager of the month' winners in Tavistock Library's new Fantasy Football League are enjoying the fruits of their wheeler-dealing.
Tickets for last Saturday's match between Plymouth Argyle and Norwich City were won by lifelong Argyle fan Kyle Roberts. His winning team, The Tigers, featured ex-Argyle star Peter Halmosi (now with Hull City) as well as Boro's new signings Justin Hoyte and Mido.
But it was the inspired selection of Sean Wright-Phillips just ahead of his two-goal debut for Manchester City that sealed the winning margin.
The runaway winner in the junior category for August was Tom's Thistles, managed by 11-year-old Thomas Calvert. Like all good managers, Thomas has built from the back — his team features a strong defence in the selection of Jamie Carragher, John Terry and Ashley Cole, complemented by the midfield skills of Joe Cole.
Victory for the Thistles netted Thomas two tickets for Tavistock AFC's FA Vase match on Saturday, with the tickets being presented by Tavistock AFC club chairman Derek Pethick on Friday at Tavistock Library.
Library staff have worked out a system of points where Fantasy Football Managers can earn extra 'cash' to buy fantasy players by borrowing books, using the library computer or attending events.
Although the competition is now well under way, there are prizes to be won each month. Entrance is free to anyone with a library membership card, and details of how to play and win can be obtained from the counter.
The points are also totalled over the whole season, and the manager of the season (U17) will win a framed Tavistock AFC first team shirt signed by the entire squad, and the over-17s winner will enjoy an exclusive tour of Plymouth Argyle's Home Park Stadium.
Runners-up prizes will include copies of the Rothman's football year book donated by Book Stop, of Market Street, Tavistock, and sports equipment donated by Active Co.
