FIVE Tidy Tavi teams totalling 14 volunteers participated in the monthly litter picking expedition on Saturday. A considerable amount of rubbish was collected, including a greater than normal amount in the centre of town around Bedford Square, the pannier market and the shops. The organisers would like to express many thanks to all those who took part. The average age of the volunteers setting out was reduced considerably by two new recruits, namely Finn and Erin, aged ten and two respectively. A spokesman for Tidy Tavi said: 'Finn turned out to be an expert with his litter picker while Erin was content to use hers to point out offending items of rubbish from her pushchair, before being distracted by the play equipment in the Meadows later in the morning. This just proves the point that volunteers of all ages can join in the fun on Tidy Tavi days!' In another venture last month, a small team of dedicated litter pickers scoured the less accessible banks of the River Tavy along its course through Tavistock. A considerable volume of rubbish was recovered in the bushes and along the rocks between Abbey Bridge and West Bridge. This consisted largely of bottles, cans and plastic bags that had been something of an eyesore for a considerable period of time. The area occupied by Tavistock's new resident cormorant was carefully avoided! Tidy Tavi's next foray will be on Saturday, October 4. Volunteers of all ages will be welcome.
