AMIDST empty pumps and plummeting fuel gauges one West Devon woman had something to smile about on Tuesday — lucky Mary Pollock of Yelverton won a year's supply of petrol from supermarket giant Safeway. Her name was plucked from the bag after thousands of hopeful shoppers completed the supermarket's prize draw this summer.
Mrs Pollock was delighted by her surprise win — even though she may have to wait a while to claim it.
'I was really chuffed, it's not often I win anything! I asked them if they knew the Lottery numbers because I'd missed them — if I'd won that they could have drawn the competition for somebody else!' she said.
Paul Kennelly, customer service manager, said Mrs Pollock will be given a special card enabling her to have £20 worth of petrol a week for nothing — once the garage has re-stocked its tanks.
'We were hoping we would have a local winner,' said Mr Kennelly, 'It's nice to give something back into the community, we were really pleased.'
'We must have had around 2,500 entries,' said promotional manager Lea Duggan.
The competition winner was announced to coincide with a major re-vamp of the garage shop at Safeway, which now stocks a greater variety of goods available between 6am and midnight.
