A NINETEENTH century church in East Cornwall has recently been given a new lease of life.

All Saints Church in Harrowbarrow was given a refurbishment in September, thanks to church funds — and has proven a success with local parishioners and visitors alike.

Old pews were taken out and comfortable chairs were installed, along with a warm fitted red carpet.

Churchwarden Peter Bonsey said: 'When the church was built in 1871 it was designed to be a school during the week and a church on Sundays.

'Now what we plan to do is to make it widely available for community use, as well as using it more frequently for services.'

The changes have made a big difference to how the building is used, and is already being used by a choir from Callington.

Mr Bonsey added: 'In addition, now that we have flexible seating arrangements, we are able to run Taizé style services and we hope shortly to have regular Healing Services, as well as our regular Sunday service each week.'

But it does not end there — plans are already being made for a garden to be created in the area around the building, which will be open for all for quiet reflection.

'We still have a long way to go with our plans to install toilets and a kitchen area.

'But we are working hard on this, and it should happen soon,' said Mr Bonsey.
