MUMS in Okehampton and Hatherleigh are to benefit from ten new peer support mothers, helping to provide support to other mums who are thinking of breastfeeding.

The new scheme comes in support of National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, which has been taking place all week.

The trained support mothers will help provide advice and support to other mums who would like guidance with breastfeeding, which offers them and their child important health benefits.

Okehampton Children's Centre runs a breastfeeding peer support group which meets every Tuesday between 1pm and 2.30pm, alongside Hatherleigh Children's centre, which also runs a peer support group every Wednesday, between 10am and 11.30am.

Consultant in public health for Devon Primary Care Trust, Sara Gibbs, said the new support mothers scheme was a very welcome initiative.

Sara said: 'Breastfeeding is the ideal way to give babies the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development.

'Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, provided they are given good information and support.

'The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding up to six months of age.

'The more support women can get to continue to breastfeed the better for them and the better for their child.'
