AN inspirational young animal lover has pulled his resources together to host a family dog show and raised hundreds of pounds for a dog rescue centre. Seven-year-old Henry Warriner from Okehampton brought the crowds in for his dog show held in Simmons Park earlier this month, and even managed to secure a celebrity guest appearance. The show was to raise funds to support Scruples Whippet Rescue, an organisation that Henry has great affiliations with, as his mother Miranda volunteers for the charity, Henry's two furry friends Buddy the whippet and Ziggy the lurcher both came from the centre, and the family fosters dogs for the charity. Henry, an Okehampton Primary School pupil, is a keen fundraiser for Scruples, having taken part in a sponsored fun run mile last year and raising £250 for the charity. He sells his own dog recipe books on his Facebook page and he is currently making bookmarks and phone charms to sell online. Miranda said Henry was always thinking of new ideas to raise money: She said: 'We adopted Ziggy as a stray from Scruples. When we went there, Henry wanted to take all the dogs home for Christmas, but he had to settle for just sending them gifts instead. We then got involved in fostering and after that he decided he wanted to raise money for Scruples.' Henry then adopted his own whippet Buddy who was born at the rescue centre. Miranda said Henry got the idea to do his own dog show after visiting his first show a while ago, and when he got home he got out a notebook and starting jotting down ideas for his own show. She said she must have been 'barking mad' for agreeing to it, which gave Henry the idea to call the event 'Henry's Barking Mad Dog Show'. With the help of his mother and a friend from Scruples, Henry turned his idea into a reality, even securing Scruples' patron, actress Jaye Griffiths from Silent Witness, to attend and present the prizes. Henry said: 'It was a lot of effort. We had lots of people with stalls and Jaye Griffiths presented the best in show and picked the raffle tickets. 'Loads of people came along and my uncle was on the microphone — we're going to make it bigger and better for next year!' Henry's Barking Mad Dog Show raised more than £600 for the rescue centre, and Henry is already planning to hold the event again next year. Miranda said: 'As soon as we got in the door after the show he already started writing down his ideas for next year. 'He's always got ideas for things to do. 'If I can't find him in the house I know he'll be scribbling down his ideas in a book somewhere. 'I'm very proud of him — he's a superstar.' Jane Wood frm Scruples Whippet Rescue said: 'Everyone involved with Scruples thinks Henry is just amazing and his tireless efforts to make his show a success provided an event to remember. 'We understand Henry is already planning next year's Barking Mad Dog Show. Good luck Henry and thank you from all of us here at Scruples Whippet Rescue!'
