MORE than 1,000 people enjoyed a fun day for all the family in Tavistock on Sunday, helping to boost the funds to makeover The Meadows.
'Incredible' and 'one of the best events in Tavistock for years' were two of the comments describing the day which was a collaboration between the Tavistock Round Table and the Meadows Makeover Group.
A specially erected stage in Bedford Square provided live band entertainment throughout the day and there were plenty of activities inside and outside the town hall with stalls, crafts and games.
The fire engine came along and there was everything from tap dancing to hairdressing on the square.
This was the first event for the group which is determined to raise the money to transform the park and make it the best in the west.
Makeover group member and co-instigator Mia Alaoui said she was so impressed by the support from the community: 'It wasn't just people with young children but those without children and with grown-up children also came along and supported us.
'It was fantastic. We sold out of everything from the 350 cupcakes to the 200 lucky dip prizes. We kept everything at 30p for the children so they could all take part.
'Someone said to me there was no better way of spending a Sunday afternoon in glorious weather then sitting on the square drinking a glass of wine and listening to a live band.
'There was a great atmosphere and I was gobsmacked by all the effort everyone put in.'
Mia said even local shop owners were delighted, with a noticeable increase in footfall on the day.
Makeover group member Keri Pierce paid particular tribute to the Tavistock Round Table members for their support.
She said: 'They sold loads of food and were pretty-much flat-out for the whole six hours. They were brilliant!'
The money raised will be put towards the first piece of equipment for the new playpark — a 30m zip wire.
The next fundraising event for the group will be a Christmas craft and children's second-hand clothing and accessories bring and buy sale in the Methodist Church on November 30.
There is also a 70s and 80s Christmas fancy dress party planned at the rugby club on December 14 which will be open to groups.
Shortly there will be a bank account and Just Giving page set up for people wanting to make donations.
