TAVISTOCK rugby players Callum Thompson, Ben Williams and Steve Lilley joined up with the South West England Rugby League side for the national rugby league championships up in Derby last week. The trio, who all associated with Plymouth Titans, took part in trials for the England Lionhearts. the England amateur rugby league side.

Player Callum Thompson and player/sports therapist Steve Lilley joined up with the South West England side while Ben Williams was asked to transfer to play for Yorkshire who were short. Ben scored the try to get Yorkshire into the final, where they narrowly lost to South East England by 8-6 points. Ben narrowly missed out on getting selected for the England Lionhearts side, having been singled out for praise from Devon head coach and South West England assistant head coach Rob Stockwell as one of the start of the championships.

Callum, who was unable to recreate his Devon and early Plymouth Titans season try scoring form, also missed out on being selected for England Lionhearts. Steve Lilley missed out on meeting the England Lionhearts physio and trying to get a place in the Lionhearts medical team. However, Steve spent the day providing medical support for all the seven regions at the national championships.
