Topsham 1st XV 0

Tavistock 1st XV 36

TAVISTOCK got off to the best possible start at Topsham on Saturday when from the first phase of play skipper Lee Greatrex linked with Neil Evans to allow him a run to the line to open the scoring with a superb individual try. Evans converted his own score.

Tavistock had to absorb intense Topsham pressure and during this period lost second row forward Lee Easton to some illegal footwork which unfortunately the referee did not spot. He was replaced in the second row by veteran Jim Jefferies who used all of his experience to good effect, locking the Tavistock scrum.

Tavistock extended their lead just before half-time when after working out a way of negating Topsham's spoiling tactics they released their backs and Duncan Law ran in the try. Evans converted.

In the second half Tavistock found their rhythm and in the front row Steve Langdon, playing out of position at hooker, showed determination to secure primary possession. This forward platform put pressure on Topsham who conceded a penalty which allowed Evans to increase the lead.

Jude Rotton was next on the scoresheet when following a scrum outside the Topsham 22-metre line which Tavistock wheeled, he picked up at the base and galloped in for a try.

A fourth try was added when Greatrex moved blind from a scrum and created space for Josh Sutton to score in the corner. Evans converted from the touchline.

Centre Law capped a superb individual performance just before the end collecting the ball in midfield, bursting through the Topsham defence 50 metres out and scoring under the posts. Evans again converted.

This victory was three out of three in the league for Tavistock this season and they hope to extend their run on Saturday at Sandy Park when they entertain Totnes, kicking off at 3pm.

Tavistock Second XV 62

TAVISTOCK second XV made it a bad day for Topsham, running out convincing winners with a display of running rugby, the forwards and back linking to good effect.

Tries were scored at regular intervals and although not getting on the scoresheet forwards Andrew Griffiths and Matt Martin were excellent in the loose as were Graham Steer and Andy Hunt in the lineout.

Scrum half Craig Pascoe had an excellent game behind his pack and continually caused Topsham problems with his probing breaks around the fringes.

Try scorers: Matt Witcher (2), Ben Neal (2), Gareth Davies (2), Simon Thompson, Phil Maloney, Paul Williams, Martin Credicott; Martin also converted six tries.
