TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowls Club has had a full programme of matches recently with some pleasing results.

The men's league team played four games recently, winning three and losing one. Most pleasing was a win over a strong Civil Service team, the highlight of which was a full count of eight on one end from Mike Allen and his rink of Brian Preece, Wallace Northey and Rob Bowhay. Their reward was to be presented with hot shot badges from the English Bowling Association .

Wins were also recorded over Peverell Park and Oreston but the club lost to their Plymouth namesakes despite having held them to a draw in a friendly match over the weekend.

The outstanding performance in the league match was a win for Malcolm Bloomer and his rink of David Perry, Wallace Northey (again) and Sandy Sanders over England international David Cutler.

Not to be outdone the ladies notched an impressive win at Kingsbridge, Marion Allen and her rink of Marlene Paramor, Hazel Lovell and Betty Browse accounting for another international.

A number of mixed matches have been held over the last week. An impressive win on the Sunday against Kensey Vale was followed on the Monday by a closely fought match with local rivals Bere Alston which resulted in a narrow win for Tavistock.

On both occasions the top skip for Tavistock was Rob Bowhay. Plymstock away were also beaten, top skip again being Marion Allen.

For anyone who was not able to attend the club's open day last Sunday it is to be repeated this Sunday the 19th at the Meadows at 10am and 2pm. Members will be on hand to give instruction, woods can be provided — all you need is to wear flat soled shoes.
