AROUND 2,000 people have viewed West Devon Borough Council's latest house-building plan.
The Local Plan was on show at six towns through September and comments are invited by October 23.
There are expected to be objections to the plan for building 550 new homes in Tavistock and 800 in Okehampton, but some of the smaller places have invited more houses in order to help them keep the community commercially viable.
The council has proposed 110 new houses for North Tawton, 90 each for Lifton and Hatherleigh, 60 for Bere Alston, 25 for Lewdown, 20 each for Spreyton and Northlew and 10 each for Exbourne and Highampton.
Devon County Council in its Structure Plan produced last year instructed West Devon to build 4,100 houses, as well as to find 35 hectares of land for industrial use, between 1995 and 2011.
The area already has more than 2,000 of these either built or being built and the Local Plan showed where the remaining 1,900 would be put.
A second draft of the plan is expected to be published early next year. A spokeswoman for West Devon said that officials had fought against the county's proposals and the number allocated to the district would have been much greater if it had not protested.
A public meeting in Tavistock town hall last week was attended by around 100, at which a wide range of concerns were voiced.
There is still an opportunity to view the Local Plan — it can be seen at the borough council offices in Tavistock and Okehampton.
