ORGANISERS of a sponsored walk around Burrator Reservoir for the Shelterbox charity are hoping the event will attract over 1,000 entrants. More than 600 people from all over Devon and Cornwall — including from many schools — have already signed up for the four-mile walk, which will be held between 11am and 3pm on Sunday, April 15. Tavistock Rotary Club, which is organising the event in conjunction with the Shelterbox Trust, are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for the charity which gives practical help to victims of disasters from around the world, such as the Boxing Day tsunami in 2005, the earthquakes in Pakistan and Iran and humanitarian aid to refugees in Sudan and Somalia. Thanks to permission from Lord Roborough, a park and ride service, provided free by C J Down Coaches of Mary Tavy, will operate from 10am between Harrowbeer (the old aerodrome at Yelverton) and Burrator Reservoir. Permission for the walk has been granted by South West Lakes Trust, Devon County Council and Devon Highways. A one-way traffic system will be in place on the day, operated by the police. Volunteer stewards have been arranged through the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Group, Tavistock Youth Committee, Tavistock Rugby Club and Plymouth Albion RFC. Toilet facilities, donated by Brandon Hire, will be placed along the route. First aid evacuation, arranged through Joe Cannon of Shelterbox, two paramedics and a Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose ambulance will be on stand-by, as well as NHS ambulance staff. There will also be entertainment on the day, weather permitting, from BlowZone, the Elastic Band and African drummers from Tavistock College. David Glover, the secretary of Tavistock Rotary Club and the volunteer Shelterbox co-ordinator for West Devon, said: 'The day is about creating awareness about the Shelterbox charity and raising money for all their good work of providing shelter and warmth to people in countries who have suffered much from natural or man made disasters. 'We are hoping that the sponsored walk, for such a good cause, will become an annual event.' Each Shelterbox, costing around £480, contains a rugged, all-weather tent, giving shelter and warmth to disaster victims, which include tools, cooking aids, water purification for ten people. Each participant is asked to raise at least £10 for Shelterbox.
