DJM Under 14 Raleigh League Phoenix City FC 4 Tavistock Thistles 7 TAVISTOCK began with a goal after only 20 seconds when Mat Havron pounced. Thistles settled well and Murphy who caused Phoenix problems all match made some good surging runs at their defence. Coupled with Lambert and Leeson the match looked to be in their control as Wearing scored after 10 minutes. However the home team did not give up. After some slow defensive movement they were back in the game with two quick goals, one of which was a miss hit cross that dropped agonisingly over the stranded goal keeper Jack Haigh, who was Thistles' man of the match. The defence made amends as Thistles pushed forward. Northmore and Jones linked well to play the ball to the wings and after runs on the wing from Jefferies, a cross ball found Wearing who scored his second. Good play from Lowther and Murphy laid the ball on for Wearing to complete his hat-trick. Not wanting to miss out on the scoring Havron then got his second. At half time Thistles looked to be controlling the play and more goals seemed likely. Snell and Newton were introduced and the second period of play started with good pressure again on Phoenix. Against the run of play Phoenix scored to make it 5-3. Thistles hit back with a goal from Leeson, after a corner from Northmore was played into his path by Argles. The match seemed to be heading for a quiet finale before a well taken free kick made it 6-4. Needing to keep ahead Thistles pushed on and after a good cross from Leeson landed at Lambert's feet he tucked it passed the keeper. The result showed the team can score and come back after making mistakes to win games and are playing exciting football which reflects the excellent effort the players are making this year. Next week home to Hooe Rovers, kick off at 1pm.
