THE Year of the Volunteer is upon us and Okehampton and District CVS and Volunteer Bureau and Tavistock CVS and Volunteer Centre are available to give you information on how to get involved. Okehampton Library is also having a small display this month to promote the year, and each month the national campaign has a specific themed agenda. Early in 2004, Chancellor Gordon Brown designated 2005 as the Year of the Volunteer. The Home Office, as the government department with responsibility for encouraging active citizenship, is working in partnership with two well-established volunteering organisations Volunteering England and CSV to co-ordinate the year?s activities. The objectives of the Year of the Volunteer are to: l Increase the number of volunteers particularly individuals from marginalised groups and young people l Open up more volunteering opportunities in the public and voluntary sector l Raise the profile of the work volunteers are doing nationwide l Thank volunteers everywhere for their time and commitment. Representatives of voluntary organisations and individuals who would like to know more about the Year of the Volunteer or would like to offer some time to volunteering should contact Okehampton and District CVS and Volunteer Bureau or Tavistock CVS and Volunteer Centre who can give information on how to get involved.
