I AM increasingly concerned about new proposals on EU criminal law which could undermine domestic law set by national governments.

The European Commission recently published proposals to further increase the powers of the EU to make it possible for Europe to draft criminal laws for the whole continent. These powers take away one of the sovereign rights of nations - that of defining and enforcing laws that take away the liberty of their citizens.

If the European Union has a concern over a piece of domestic law then they should take it up with the national government, rather than try to directly apply legal rulings to that country's citizens.

These proposals would give the European Commission further licence to push Europe towards a federal system such as the USA. This is not the kind of EU that I want to see.

I believe the commission should focus on improving co-operation between governments without trying to grab yet more powers.
