THE sun shone again for the Tidy Tavi volunteers on Saturday morning.

More than 30 people old and young turned out to collect the usual huge volume of rubbish from the streets of Tavistock. The group was delighted to welcome a number of new volunteers not only from the town, but also from villages in the surrounding area.

Everyone is welcome to come along and help for a couple of hours on the first Saturday of each month. There is no commitment required to attend regularly. The group meet at 09.50am outside The Wharf. Litter pickers, rubbish bags and high visibility tabards are provided, just bring a pair of gloves.

Many volunteers commented on the gratifying fact that the town centre was already very clean. The notable exception, however, was the conspicuous deposits of cigarette ends on pavements outside certain establishments. Cigarette ends constitute litter in the same way as any other discarded material and anyone dropping them in a public place is in contravention of the Litter Act of 1983.

But the group commended all the businesses who regularly sweep the area where smokers gather outside their premises or provide ash-trays for employees to use.

Several groups of volunteers ventured to more distant areas such as the Greenlands neighbourhood and the northern approaches to the town along the Brent Tor road. It is hoped to visit such as these more frequently in future.

The next Tidy Tavi day will be Saturday, May 4.
