THE final week of the season for Tavistock Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club saw the completion of the ladies' competitions and two mixed matches, one of which was the traditional 'end of season' ladies' captain's team v gents' captain's team.
The club championships concluded during a week which saw lady member Yvonne Meneer winning her third trophy — she has now won three of the four ladies' section competitions, having beaten Jean Flay in the championship, Marion Allen in the handicap and Marlene Paramour in the Jackie Fenner trophy.
Wednesday's mixed match against the Gardens Bowling Club touring team had to be abandoned two ends after the half-time refreshments break, due to heavy rain making the green unplayable.
The result at the time the game stopped was a win for Tavistock 74-51, winning four rinks and losing two. Tavistock's winning rinks were skipped by Bernie Downs (11-7), Eric Stevens (13-7), Mike Allen (23-5) and Marion Allen (13-5).
Saturday's hotly contested dual of the Captain's teams, resulted in a victory for the ladies' Captain's teams, who won four of the six triples rinks played. Skip Stuart Doidge led his team of Betty Browse and Gill Saunders to a 24-18 victory. Val Southern and Arthur Worth aided skip Ron Cooper in his 22-10 win. Skip John Smith, playing in a fetching drag outfit, led his team of Tony Coombs and Joan Solly to a 16-13 win. Skip Geoff Cork won 17-13, thanks to some excellent support work from his team of Roy Northam and June Watson.
The men's Captain's winning rinks were skipped by Pat Sykes and Mike Allen. Pat led his team of Walley Northey and Jane Eslick to a 18-9 win and Mike's team of Clive Jago and Freda Isaac, assisted him in a 19-12 win.
The match was followed by a superb buffet provided by catering secretary, Dorice Hicks and her husband Clifford. All participants agreed that both the match and the buffet were a fitting end to a very good season.
