FINGERS were on the buzzers last week as the next generation of masterminds pitted their wits against each other. There were entries from 12 schools for the Okehampton Rotary Club's annual primary school quiz, which saw 24 teams compete in the biggest event to date. The winners of the heats, South Tawton, Lewtrenchard and Northlew and Ashbury, were joined in the final by the two best runners up, Bridestowe and Chagford. The final took place on February 27 in the Octagon Theatre at Okehampton College. The teams battled it out over nine rounds with topics including English, maths, spelling, history, geography, science and general knowledge. The victors, in one of the closest finals yet, were South Tawton who secured a hat-trick of wins. Chagford were in second place with Northlew third. The winning team was Charlie Holmes, James Maccullock, Alex Fox and Jamie Mallet. They each received certificates and a prize of two books each that had been kindly donated by Chamber Harrap Publishers Ltd. The prizes were presented by Rotary district governor, Felicity Murden, who also presented South Tawton primary school with a cheque for £50. Mrs Murden said: 'The children demonstrated their knowledge so well and so obviously enjoyed the event. The constant knocking of schools and young people is totally unfounded.'
