WITH their floral arrangements, seasonal decorations and tip top cleanliness, the public toilets in Tavistock Pannier Market have been given a five star rating for the fourth year running by the Loo of the Year Awards.
Mike Bone from the Loo of the Year Awards Ltd said the toilets had the 'Wow Factor': 'A five star grading means they have that something extra on top of the good facilities including disabled toilets and baby changing facilities. They are in very, very good condition despite not being new, and are well maintained.'
The gradings go from one to five and Market Reeve Eddie Carruthers said caretaker Alison Ewings did a really good job.
'She keeps the loos immaculate and it is lovely accolade to have a five star grading.
'It definitely matters to the people who visit the town.
'People are always complimenting us on the toilets and Alison decorates them for Christmas and with floral arrangements. She is in and out all day cleaning them.'
Alison Ewings said many visitors came to Tavistock Pannier Market and said they wished they had public toilets like them at home.
'I like to see clean toilets when I am anywhere so I keep these in the way I like,' said Mrs Ewings.
Mayor of Tavistock and chairman of the town council which owns the pannier market Philip Sanders said: 'I am delighted that we have been successful for four years in achieving top rate toilets in the pannier market.
'I know the town council and staff work very hard and I am told the cleaning is done to a high standard.
'The pannier market is the one of the jewels in the crown of the town and and clearly, good, clean and well maintained toilet facilities are very important to visitors and local people alike.'
