TAVISTOCK College students swept the board at the recent round of the Rotary Club's Youth Speaks competition.

The three teams which had won the first round against Kelly College took part in the next round at Callington Community College on February 10, facing tough opposition from many other schools.

The Tavistock College teams won all the categories. The intermediate team of Florence Rodgers, Joe Way and Jed Coiley won with their speech on optimism and pessimism. In the senior section, Josh Evans, Jack Shepherd and Adam Browner won with a humorous discussion on UFOs, and the college's other senior team of Josh Stephens, George Rodgers and Charlie Hubbard was a very close second with a passionate speech about the encroachment of the virtual world.

All three teams will now represent the college and Tavistock Rotary Club at the district final on February 28 in Truro.

A group from Tavistock Primary School gave a brave performance but were not successful in going forward to the next round, having to compete against eight other teams.
