MORE than 200 walkers came together on Sunday to raise money for charity whilst enjoying the stunning Devon countryside in glorious sunshine. The sixth annual Leafy Lanes Walk, organised by Pals of Plymouth Oncology Outpatients and Chemotherapy (POOCH), raised more than £1,500 by inviting adults, children and dogs to enjoy Lydford and Bridestowe. A friendly atmosphere built as participants from all over the South West came together at the Fox and Hounds Hotel, Bridestowe, for the start of the walk. Participants set off just after 11am with a party mood prevailing and the fun and enjoyment was added to by the cake stall en route, set up by Hannah and Carol Whitely, which raised £132. Organiser, David Hocking, the co-founder of POOCH, having recovered from cancer of the larynx, wanted to raise funds to help others who suffered from cancer. Along with Laura Washer, who he met while she was undergoing chemotherapy, David founded POOCH in 2011. He said: 'As ever, I have been overwhelmed by the support, which is now coming from further and further afield, due to POOCH's work being recognised by people from St Austell to Wembury.' However, it was not just people from the South West who came to join the fun — participants arrived from as far afield as Hampshire and former Lydford resident, Corrin Russell, travelled from Swindon to help out with the marshalling. All monies raised by POOCH go directly to Derriford Hospital's radiotherapy and chemotherapy departments to buy specialist equipment and, in particular, money raised from Leafy Lanes this year will go towards purchasing patient position systems for the radiotherapy department.
