SEVERAL of us attended the pre-hearing meeting into the core strategy for West Devon led by the planning inspector Paul Crysell. Now the matter is in his hands and we will reach a defining moment in our local history very soon.
As a resident of Okehampton I am deeply concerned about the consequences of passing the plans. I know that many others are also very angry at the way in which West Devon Borough Council has disregarded warnings about the destruction of the town as a hub for the surrounding villages.
What does the future hold? My imagination runs riot when I come face to face with the new gate which has been erected at the junction of East Street and Crediton Road! How about a signpost there, indicating the way to the urban sprawl? A cartoonist could have a field day with the symbolism of the gate held fast by its chains. Maybe an artist would be able to create a striking depiction as a backdrop to the gate.
Where do we go from here? There is still time to make our voices heard even though many regard any protest as a complete waste of time.
