A LACK of facilities for young people, the need to assist in developing the local food economy, ideas for renewable energy and the perilous state of some of our village amenities — these are some of the themes to emerge from a project aiming to regenerate the Hatherleigh area.

Volunteers are being sought in the quest to develop a brighter future for this area as the project is now at a crucial stage in its existence.

After months of consultation, where a picture is becoming clearer of how people want to see their communities progress, local residents are required to play a pivotal role in the planning process.

Hatherleigh is in line for up to £1-million from the South West Regional development as part of the Market and Coastal Towns Initiative (M and CTI) and the agency now has a detailed analysis of the community consultation along with a recommendation for further funding to take the project forward.

This phase of funding will be used to assist the development of local projects and to make progress to a Strategic Action Plan for the area — all this work requires members of the community to get involved.

Project leaders are looking for enthusiastic people from a range of backgrounds who feel they can contribute to the regeneration of the area.

'You may be involved with young people or run your own business and are prepared to bring those skills to bear for the benefit of your community,' said chairman of the Hatherleigh Area M and C TI Steering Group.

'There will be the opportunity to develop your skills with the offer of local training.'

People are being sought from all the parishes included in the project which are Hatherleigh, Exbourne, Jacobstowe, Broadwoodkelly, Monkokehampton, Iddesleigh, Meeth, Highampton, Inwardleigh, Northlew, Beaworthy, Bratton Clovelly and Germansweek.
