THE granite walls of Castle Drogo echoed the sound of laughter, clapping and cheering from some warm and supportive audiences who came along to see the recent production of 'Raise the Roof' by the Get Changed Theatre Company. The production used promenade performance in the first half of the show, guiding people around the beautiful grounds and rooms of Castle Drogo to experience individual and interactive scenes from the show. In keeping with the turn of the century era and the history of the castle, the show incorporated a cast of time-warped Victorian characters including Francis, Julius and Basil Drewe and castle architect Edwin Lutyens. Mandy Hendley, who went to watch the show, said: 'What a fabulous evening last night at Castle Drogo with Get Changed. There was an amazing atmosphere created by amazing performances. Capturing the past and present using the grounds and the castle was inspirational. It was wonderful in its wackiness and delivered with heart and soul. Thank you for the best evening ever.' Raise the Roof was the final part of Get Changed Makes History – a three part project collaboration between Get Changed Theatre Company and the National Trust's Castle Drogo. Since the spring, Get Changed has installed art installations in the grounds of the castle and has also performed six individual glimpse theatre days at Drogo. The culmination of the whole project was the finale performance of Raise the Roof. Paula Clarke from the National Trust, said: 'This project in partnership with Get Changed has been one of the most ambitious community activities we have ever undertaken at Castle Drogo. 'We have always felt that Drogo is a place to inspire and this collaboration has proved that again and again. It has been a delight to work alongside the Get Changed team.' Based in Okehampton, Get Changed is a dynamic and vibrant organisation working with adults with learning disabilities. It uses drama, dance, music, photography, animation and artwork to showcase individual talent and ability. The aim of the Get Changed Makes History project was to create a new arena for the group participants to work in, reaching new audiences and making connections with the general public. For the volunteers and staff at Drogo it was a new experience working alongside and together with people with learning disabilities. Heather Kay, general manager of Castle Drogo said: 'I think having this group around and working with staff and volunteers over the last several months has created more confidence for the team in understanding how to welcome and engage with disabled visitors which is really positive.'
