IN a feat of gardening expertise that would make Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock green with envy, the Tavistock Taskforce dug deep to make a garden out of a jungle. The garden at the youth café on St James Street in Okehampton has been in a state of disrepair for some time - a veritable jungle of weeds. Kerry Hickman, the area worker for the youth café, said she had been trying to do something about the state of the garden since January but lacked the manpower to be able to tackle it. Enter the Tavistock Taskforce, a group of volunteers that provide a service, not only in the projects they undertake, but also aim to promote healthy lifestyles through their projects and with an age range from 18 to 80. Director Peter O?Dell said: ?There is always a role for everyone. Anyone can get involved, whatever their age and whatever their ability.? The transformation that took place in the youth café garden on Thursday was nothing short of majestical. It was stripped and cleared while gravel was in the process of being laid. Eventually, the garden will host a selection of plants that have been specifically chosen and will increase the space that the youth café has at the moment. Kerry said: ?It means the youth café will have more room for activities as well as a great social space. ?It will be great in the summer because we will be able to have barbecues out there and it?ll be a lovely place for everyone to chill out in. ?It is going to provide us with the chance to get everyone involved in environmental projects like composting and growing.? The day was part of the ?MAD? week, a week of ?Make a Difference? days, designed to promote volunteering across the country. The Tavistock Taskforce were presented with certificates as a mark of their achievements. Jaqui Wolstenholme, rural outreach officer for West Devon Community and Voluntary Services, said: ?It was a fantastic opportunity to show how much of a difference can be made in one day. ?Anyone who is interested in volunteering should come down and see us at the Volunteer Centre on St James Street or give us a call on 01837 55047.? The garden at the youth café should be completed by the end of the week and young people are always encouraged to come along to the café. Tavistock Taskforce is looking for more volunteers, whatever their ability. They can be contacted on 01822 610071.
