VIEWING Bedford Square on a typical Tavistock February day, myself on Saturday morning and my wife in the afternoon, we both independently came to the opinion that as it now is the square is an eyesore, the cheap Iberian granite having weathered into an appalling colour.

Those officials whose concept it was must be very concerned, at best embarrassed, by the way in which their bright ideas have converted into stark boring reality in only six months, whilst the councillors who encouraged them must be feeling more than a little concerned at the undermining of their judgement.

The whole underlines the folly of doing things just because money, insufficient in this instance, is available.

The square is now in need of enhancement with the addition of quality street furniture, including some attractive lamp standards and other features that will offset the wide-open no man's land that it appears to be.

Of course, that creates a problem, for any such additions will make it very difficult for the square to be used for the purpose for which it was enhanced — as a community centre — and where the county council's terms, administered by the town council, for so doing are onerous.
