HATHERLEIGH, giantkillers the week before against University, were given a taste of their own medicine — Wonford, three leagues lower than their hosts, provided the shock of the day.
The home team never really settled into any real pattern and with the visitors showing an all too zealous will to win, an upset was always on the cards.
Hatherleigh, having been guilty of missing several good opportunities, went ahead through Stuart Dymond after Gary Knight's header had come back off the post.
The game continued in the same pattern with Wonford rarely troubling the home keeper, until a moment of controversy changed the game. The Wonford centre forward, clean through on goal, appeared to be yards offside but stuck the ball in the net — despite the linesman's flag the goal was allowed.
Wonford,within two minutes, took the lead. A long ball forward saw a missed clearance and the ball was put into an empty net.
Hatherleigh threw men forward in the last quarter of the game but could not break down a resolute Wonford defence.
Hatherleigh will have to improve on their performance in the coming weeks when they enter a crucial part of the season.
