WORDS failed an NSPCC representative after pupils at St Peter's CE Junior School in Tavistock raised more than £1,500 for the charity with a sponsored spell. Each year the school undertakes a major fundraising event to support an outside charity. Following a visit to the school a few weeks ago by Charlie Francis, a worker for the NSPCC, who explained how the charity supported local children and families in real need, pupils were keen to help raise funds and agreed to do the sponsored spell. Headteacher John George said: 'Everyone took part and almost all secured sponsors. Words were chosen to be challenging and to improve spelling skills and the results achieved were "excellent".' Mr Francis returned to collect the sponsor forms and count the money three weeks after the event. 'He was amazed and delighted! He said that a good school of our size would normally raise in the order of £500-£700. St Peter's excelled all hopes and expectations, raising over £1,500,' said Mr George. Mr Francis commended the children on their enthusiasm and commitment to helping others.
