A SCORE of orchard enthusiasts gathered at Hatherleigh on March 11 to hear Michael Gee, chairman of Orchards Live, advise on the rewards and pitfalls of establishing a traditional orchard.

Michael said planning before planting was vital.

'Too many people rush to order apple trees before they have thought about guarding their trees, essential if sheep, deer or cattle are around, or how they are going to manage the sward under the trees,' he said.

Michael listed the characteristics of a perfect orchard site, and the huge tonnage of fruit that could be produced from just an acre.

On apple varieties, Michael said he was heartened by the availability of West Country varieties from a growing number of nurseries.

He advised those attending to taste apple varieties before planting, even though this was not always easy.

Autumn Apple Days often have different apples for sampling, and the Hatherleigh evening provided a dozen different apple juices made by West Lake Cider.

'Don't plant by pretty name — ask members for advice' said Michael.

Future activities planned by Orchards Live are orchard walks, with an opportunity to try different apples, and a range of courses to help those restoring orchards or planting new ones.

Different tools and equipment are also available to members.
