Okehampton First XV 33 Torrington First XV 3 THE Okes faced one of the biggest games of the season on Saturday, entertaining the undefeated table toppers, Torrington, at The Show Field. Keen to knock Torrington down a peg or two, Okehampton knew a win would leave them top of the pile in the Devon One standings. Okehampton where quick to get their noses in front with Dave Wills touching down in the corner off a well drilled move starting at the base of the scrum. Both teams kept play fairly tight in the first half exchanging kicks and running some close lines to retain ball possession. Okehampton managed to further their lead through a couple of Andy Brimmacombe penalties. The score at the break: 11-0. In the second half the team set about dismantling the Torrington defence. Arnie Searle, Andy Brimmacombe and Tom Powell linked up well to see Tom Powell go over in the corner, on the end of one of the best team tries seen at The Showfield for quite a few years. They linked up again soon after but this time it was Andy Brimmacombe who reached the line in some fine wide play that saw Okehampton push clear to a 21 point lead with no reply from the visitors. In response to what was becoming a bit of a walkover Torrington made some ground on the attack but could only muster a penalty after some solid work in defence from the Okehampton team. Not to be left out, Lee Carey found himself on the end of another piece of inspirational back play, stemming from a quick lineout and ending underneath the Torrington posts in the safe hands of the Okehampton captain Lee Carey. Andy Brimmacombe was happy to take the two points and push Okehampton?s points tally up even more, sinking any hopes of a Torrington come-back. The day was rounded off by some more strong running from full back Arnie Searle, as he carried the ball and three Torrington players over the line to seal a convincing win for Okehampton, on a day that saw the team reach the heady heights of top of the Devon One standings. This week, no game, giving the team a well deserved rest before facing DHSOB?s away in two weeks time.
