FOURTEEN students from Tavistock College will be appearing at Plymouth Crown Court on Saturday — they have all been charged with the task of beating teams from eight other schools at the tenth annual mock trial competition.

The youngsters will adopt the roles of advocates, witnesses, jurors and court officials to convince the judge — a real life barrister — of their case.

The competition is organised by the Citizenship Foundation and the Bar Council to give participating students hands-on experience of the working of the law.

Many of the students are hoping to pursue careers in the law.

Mock advocate Eleanor Browne said: 'I have always been interested in a career in law and hope to become a barrister. This competition will be of great benefit to me since it will give me first hand experience of court procedure and advocacy. As a team, we have all enjoyed the competition and look forward to being in the court room.'

The competition gets under way at 9.30am and the winning team will secure a place at the finals to be held in London.
