SINCE Okehampton Argyle qualified for the final of the East Devon Senior Cup the question on everyone?s lips has been ?when did Okehampton last win or even get to the final, of a major knockout cup?? Well, excluding the Okehampton Cup, which has been running since the season 1972/73 and was won on four occasions by Argyle who will be contesting the final again this year, the answer is ? only twice since the second world war. The first time was in season 1947/48, when Okehampton beat Astor Institute 4-1 in the final of the Devon Junior Cup, played at St James? Park, Exeter. That prolific team consisting of many war veterans retired at about the same time, and the team soon slipped back into junior football. In season 1952/53 Okehampton reached the final of another knockout cup, but this time it was only contested by the clubs of the Exeter and District League. This was known as the Football Express Cup and once again the final was played at St James? Park and the opponents this time were Westexe Rovers from Tiverton. Okehampton again ran out winners, but this time the score was much closer, ending at 2-1 with Bob Slee scoring both goals. The final of this year?s East Devon Cup competition is to take place at Tiverton Town?s ground on Saturday May 14. Argyle?s opponents are Heavitree Social Club who have already come out winners on the two occasions both teams met in the league. The club has decided to run two coaches to Tiverton on that Saturday so there will be plenty of seats available for supporters. It will be on a first come, first served basis. To book your seat please contact chairman Alan King by Sunday May 8, telephone (01837) 54951. The price of seats will be set at a later date, depending on the number travelling.
