IN humid and sultry conditions last Sunday, 13 members of Tavistock Athletic Club tackled the Plymouth 10K and the heat took its toll on both the competitors and their times. The course did not help either being 2 laps around Central Park starting by the Mayflower Centre, dropping down to Pennycomequick via Ford Park Cemetery and then climbing back the steepest way via Alma Road. Evergreen Paul Sturtridge took it all in his stride however to come an excellent 7th. overall in 39 minutes 46 seconds, and he was the 1st Vet 50 to finish. There was then a gap before the second member appeared, Tony Shearer who came 35th. out of the field of 164 in 47.29. Other times : 40th. Simon Wakeham 49.06; 46th. Andy Smith 50.26; 54th. Trevor Williams 51.40; 55th. Peter Searle 51. 45; 62nd. Keith Bowles 52.42; 118th. Cathy Johns 63.05; 121st. Rebecca Sargent 63.16; 129th. Marion Playle 64.50; 136th = Jane Mitchell, Mary-Bridget Flynn-Samuels and Wendy Outhwaite 67.29. It was hard work, but valuable points will have been earned in the club?s Grand Prix. The club has running groups for 5 minute milers to slow joggers and new members are always welcome at the club which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Tavistock College Sports Hall at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.
