IF you are looking for something that little bit out of the ordinary on Saturday July 9, Barometer World in Merton is celebrating Admiral FitzRoy?s 200th birthday at their special charity open day in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. FitzRoy, probably the most influential person in the history of British weather forecasting, was the first chief of the Meteorological Office in 1854 and his pioneering work has saved many lives. An example of his storm barometer can be seen in the newly opened exhibition at Barometer World, which will be officially opened on the day. The event is sure to be of interest to both young and old, with wacky experiments ? a model of Brunel?s atmospheric ?vacuum? train will run, and visitors can meet members of Fitzroy?s naval landing party. Entry is £3.50 for adults and £1.50 for children. Entry fees plus profits from refreshments will be donated to Devon Air Ambulance Trust.
